Escobaria with strange wool

I had a strange thing happen to one of my Escobaria plants this summer. While the other cacti were forming flower buds this one made a lot of woolly structures where the flower buds should have been. I'm unsure why, but then a few weeks later it began to die. I wish it had bloomed instead, and I wish I understood what it was doing with all of the wool and why it then died. Strange end for a cactus.
