Saguaro in Saguaro Park

I thought this was a very beautiful view in Saguaro Park outside of Tucson.

Stenocereus thurberi

This is the cactus to see in Organ Pipe National Monument, and we saw most of them just outside of the visitors center. They told us there were more of them in the south end of the park, but these roads were closed.

Mammillaria with full flowers

This one had its flowers wide open - they are very adorable little cacti.

More Mammillaria

These Mammillaria seemed to be growing all over the southern parts of Arizona. This one was just starting to open its flowers.

Mammillaria - there's always more to want.

Mammillaria are really wonderful cacti and I can see why some people actually try to collect all of them - and there are hundreds. This is another one from the Tucson Botanical Gardens.

Cholla with Purple Skin

There were lots of different kinds of Cholla growing all over southern Arizona. These were especially beautiful and I had to have at least a picture of them. The plants themselves would be very difficult to grow in Wisconsin, but I wish I had a stem piece to try rooting.

Opuntia in Organ Pipe Cactus N. Monument

These 'Prickly Pear Cactus' Plants were growing everywhere in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and I wish we could have been there when they were all blooming. Still, wonderful plants to see.

New Red Pads

I don't know the species of these Opuntia, but the new pads they were putting out were very beautiful. These plants were growing all around the Tucson area.

Mammillaria bowls

I think the only way to grow Mammillaria plants as grand as these is to live in Tucson. We can get lots of Mammillaria species to grow fairly well here in Wisconsin, but the fuzzy clumping ones are more challenging. These were in the Botanical Gardens.

Echinocactus platyacanthus

Going back to vacation photos for a while.... This is the first time I've ever seen an adult form of this cactus, Echinocactus platyacanthus. This one was at the Tuscon Botanical Gardens and they are beautiful plants that, I understand, can grow to over 6 feet tall.

Echinocereus viridiflorus var. montanus flowers

One last photo of these Echinocereus viridiflorus var. montanus flowers for their beauty. These are really great plants to grow and I look forward to watching them bloom every spring. It gives me a kind of sad feeling to think that I have to wait another year to see them again.

Echinocereus viridiflorus var. montanus flowers all in a row

This one was very fun to watch this spring and put its flowers out all in a row. Usually they bloom with a few flowers at a time over a few weeks but this one opened all of its flowers at the same time - except a few buds it held back for later.
