There are only a few species in this genus and one of them is often thought of as the image of what a cactus should look like. The flower of Carnegiea gigantea is the state flower of Arizona, but it is unrealistic to imagine growing any Carnegiea as a four seasons flowering house plant. Even if this plant were to grow to full adult size in a room with lots of sun it might still be difficult for it to flower. In habitat adult plants grow out in full sun with plenty of high temperature days over 100 °F, but as juveniles they are able to live as house plants with less sun and much cooler summer temperatures.
