This variety will grow quite large over time and with care it is possible for the plant to out grow the limitations of most interior living spaces.

This variety will do their best as houseplants with lots of sun and they become stressed with inadequate light which could result in poor health or even death.

Yes - does well with cool winter time temperatures. This variety will tolerate temperatures down below 50 °F. if the roots are kept dry, and will do very well in a home with energy saving thermostat setting.

This variety stores much of its water in the root system and will need a large or deep pot to accommodate their extensive roots.

This variety is unlikely to flower as a house plant and they should be chosen with flowering as a low priority.

Potential living space locations include; East, West or South windows and three to four season rooms are good, but it will grow better outdoors. Please provide winter conditions below freezing for this plant, otherwise it will never bloom. If freezing winter conditions fail be be provided for this plant it is likely to die. This is a very cold climate cactus and will survive winters down to -40 °F. This variety is going to grow better and bloom if it is planted in an outdoor rock garden between zones 7 to 2, and really should be kept outdoors.


These plants are no more than a few pads, but can grow into a mat forming colony.


This species is native to Dunn county, Wisconsin, but these plants are propagated from plants which have been in greenhouse propagation for many decades.
