Pachypodium Click on a thumbnail on the right to view the individual species and for purchasing information.
The native habitats for Pachypodium are Africa and Madagascar, and some species grow as low shrubs and others can grow as big as trees. They have wide thorn covered stems and lose their leaves in the winter season like deciduous leaves. A few species may bloom in cultivation and the flower colors are white, yellow or red. They need plenty of sun in the growing seasons and do very well when set outdoors in full sun. In the winter they can have extremely low light after they have dropped their leaves. Special care needs to be taken in winter when their leaves are gone, because they will rot easily if the soil is moist. The best way to over winter them is to keep them in a medium light area and withhold water completely until the following spring as late as May. In the spring they can be moved back into a sunny location and watered on a regular basis for the growing seasons. If you can resist the urge to water them in the winter they are easy plants to grow and ideal for a four seasons climate home because they can live with very little light in their winter rest periods.
