Adult Plant Growing Information

5spine.gif Five-Spine Rating - 5?

Yes - small container size plant. This variety will occupy a small flower pot comfortably and remain a manageable sized house plant.

Yes - tolerates low light levels. This variety will do well as a houseplant in locations with short periods of direct sun and some indirect or filtered light.

Yes - does well with cool winter time temperatures. This variety will tolerate temperatures down below 50 °F. if the roots are kept dry, and will do very well in a home with energy saving thermostat setting.

Yes - easy care root system. This variety stores water in the parts of the plant which are above the soil leaving the root system small enough to fit into a proportionally sized flower pot.

Yes - flowers easily as a house plant. This variety is likely to flower as a house plant, but results will depend on a variety of growing conditions.

good locations

Potential living space locations include; East, West or South windows and three to four season rooms with partial shade is good, but it will grow better with more light. This species will tolerate very cool days and cold nights, but will need the temperatures to remain above 25 °F. If this variety is to be set outdoors during the growing season it needs to be in a location with plenty of sun and will tolerate lots of rain.

If this species is kept outdoors in a flower pot it is important to consider that bright sun and warmth promote less green and more blue skin tones. The skin color has a blue tone, but this color will more green when the plant is exposed to cool wet conditions. It is better to bring the plant indoors when summer begins to cool down to help it keep the bluish color. This is a species that can survive very cold conditions, but will also suffer cosmetic damage.

Flowers are brilliant yellow with broad peddles.

size

This species grows rather fast as a single stemmed plant until it begins to reach about 4 inches in diameter. The main stem continues to grow up to and over 6 inches wide and a foot high producing smaller clusters of stems around the base of the main stem. Most of the smaller stems grow from the sun side of the plant, so the whole appearance is more of an asymmetrical clump with one large stem higher than the cluster of smaller stems. The whole plant eventually becomes a group of somewhat graduated stems growing large enough to fit into a 4 - 5 gallon flower pot, but that take many years to happen. Note; some plants will remain single stemmed plants, but most produce a nice cluster of stems as they grow.
