This genus grows in the south western United States and Mexico with lots of interesting variation in appearance and flower colors. They may bloom as older plants and their colors range mostly from orange, magenta, red, white and yellow to brown. They often have several flower colors in combination and are more likely to bloom as house plants when they are older. In a cool humid climate it best to avoid giving them too much water unless they are in a growth cycle. It is important to withhold water during their cool season rest for at least four months and only mist them once a week if the air is too dry.
